Task 028  Edited Image Analysis

Edited Image

Examine the edited image and keep the following principles of visual communication in mind:

1.Subject and Composition
What is the image about?  If you create a title or caption for the picture, you will usually be defining the subject.  What are the objects of study in the picture and how are they arranged relative to one another? Determining the foreground element of the picture is one way to determine the subject. Determining the components of all three grounds - fore, middle and back - will help define the subject in terms of the supporting elements.

2. Point of View
Where is the observer in relation to the scene? Determining your position relative to the subject(s) of the image will help determine the point of view.  Do you see all, some or none of what the image subjects would “see”?  Are you in front, to the side, or in back of the subjects?  Are you on the same plane, or above or below that of the subjects?

3. Mood
What is the emotion being expressed by the image?  Determining how light is used in the picture is one way to interpret the mood the author wishes to convey.  If the subject includes people, body language will help create the mood. The middle and background elements are also generally used to create a context for the subject which conveys the mood.

4. Purpose
What message does the author want to convey? Taken as a whole, what does the picture “say” to the audience? What is the “take away” from having seen the image?
